New format, more Inspiration, more new Faces and Six Speeches in total last Thursday evening at Croydon Communicators!

New and regular guests - 11 in total!!! YOU ARE ALL SO WELCOME.

Members, Dignitaries & Guests were warmly greeted at the the door by a friendly Aleks. What a pleasant way to settle any last minute nerves from any new guest or pending speakers.

The evening was set to be a speech marathon and no other than the confidence of our Sergeant at Arms, Arlene was required to open the meeting with a great smile and a huge WELCOME to settle the audience.

President Hanna, full of energy and as vibrant as ever introduced Croydon Communicators and demonstrated the essence of good communication skills and gave us a brief history of Toastmasters. As always EXCELLENCE TOGETHER.

Practice makes perfect and experience certainly does show, as the ever enthusiastic and seasoned speaker of the Toastmaster arena David L took control as Toastmaster for the evening and set a theme for the evening... 'Change Little and Change Often'... 'So what one thing would you like to change?'. There was some food for thought for the audience! Now, if that was not enough, the format for tonight's event had also changed and we had six-speeches lined up... roll on...

With the program set and all intros & formalities explained it was time to keep track of time and make way for our timekeeper for the evening Amma, who precisely described the benefits of keeping track of time... and here's a quote 'We may delay, but time will not' - Benjamin Franklin... More food for thought!

This was certainly an evening of 'change' and a first time role (CONGRATULATIONS) presented itself to Simon, our Harkmaster for the evening. This was a grammarian role with a difference because the audience were in for a treat... stay seated, keep listening and watch this space!

One could feel the energy brewing, so why not let the audience soak up some of that energy and get them talking. Warm up leader Elizabeth posed a question to the audience, "If you had the opportunity to go back to a specific year, which year would you go back to and why?". Some great responses followed including; 1588 facing the Spanish Armada; being part of the fashionable 1960's; going back to being given pocket money by my father; the Lunar Landing's of 1967; The fashionable 1960's and to being part of the 1966 coup in Ghana. WOW... time travel could be interesting!

Audience, are you ready for some inspiration? Six prepared speeches followed with a short interval in the middle. First to take centre stage with an ICEBREAKER speech was KJ and a speech simply entitled, 'Untitled'. This was a well delivered personal account of life, growing up with many challenges, searching, achievements and accomplishments. KJ you certainly have started on the road to another accomplishment... The Toastmaster journey. Fantastic!

In full swing and second to take the stage with his speech number five speech entitled 'Spiritual Foundations' was Samir. Samir took the audience on a spiritual journey of building the blocks and pillars of a sound foundation. Something we all need! Great stage presence, movement, gestures, voice projection and biblical quotes. For one minute, one could actually see Samir literally building those three pillars on the stage! Delivered with excellence.

WELCOME back David B :-) and with a hilarious speech entitled "My Lost Door". There was just a moment to dwell on the event when the audience burst in to fits of laughter. You had to be there last Thursday to 'see' and totally get this! Warning - never ever forget your room keys in the hotel room and wonder off to shared facilities; know your surroundings, otherwise you might find yourself caught in an uncompromising situation!! How you got out of that one no one knows! Luck was surely on your side.
Three great speeches and more to come before the break - it was time to evaluate the first three speakers. David L promptly introduced the evaluators Cheryn, Hanna & David T to provide some encouraging comments, commendations and recommendations on the all the speeches.

First to evaluate was Cheryn who was concise in her evaluation of KJ in his speech called 'Untitled. Cheryn, clearly making good use of the CCRRC evaluation techniques and demonstrating good listening skills.

Second to evaluate was the experienced Hanna, again pointing out the highlights, good technique, stage and body movements in Samir's 'Spiritual Foundations'. David T, always knows how to enhance an evaluation and when evaluating David B, "the third David", the audience relived the speech from a totally different perspective. EXCELLENCE TOGETHER.

Pressing for time, our timekeeper Amma was back to give a quick account of timings so far. We're all on point so far and, we also had time for another quote; 'The past is a ghost, the future a dream and all we have is now' - Bill Cosby.

Hold tight and stay with us... More speeches still to come, but how about a break. But wait. Our VP of Education, Cheryn had an announcements... Our End of Year Dinner Celebration is just round the corner! Contact Hanna or Joe for more information and remember to book your menu selection.
After the interval Arlene quickly reconvened the meeting.

Sticking with the speeches and fourth in line to shine was Joe with his speech number six entitled 'Think Environment' - Planting environmental seeds into the audiences minds for an evening. This was definitely one for the audience to take on board. Lights off when not needed, don't buy what we don't need, prevent wastage and what!!!? A solar farm the size of Wales in the desert to generate enough energy to power the world for a day! Surely, that's more food for an environmental thought!

The fifth speech was entitled 'The Wedding Speech'. A true to life wedding speech presented by John to his life long and faithful friend Isaac. Great humour filled with sentiment and good wishes, delivered with the calm and coolest of Issac's best man - John, you looked and felt the part. Any up and coming weddings... ask John for a tip or two!

And to complete the speech marathon, last and certainly not least came 'Bias', and what a speech this was. This could have been a lecture room full of physiatrists, economists and statisticians and it would have had them fixated on the topic. Simply put Neuro Linguistic Programming of Thinking. Fantastic speech with a wealth of facts and examples delivered with conviction. Thanks Aarthi, you've restored faith in the phrase 'think out side the box'. One is always learning new things here at Croydon Communicators!

Back for some more evaluations. Firstly, Sue provided a compressive CCRRC evaluation, expressing the use of variable vocal pitch, stage movement and audience engagement on Joe's speech 'Think Environment'. Second on the evaluation stage was Wumi - a first time evaluation (CONGRATULATIONS) - picking the best of John's 'The wedding Speech'. Wumi, you're learning very fast! No-one would have guessed this was your first evaluation! And to end the evaluations, Gareth demonstrated how to pull out the finer details of evaluation and listening skills when evaluating Aarthi's speech 'Bias'.

So with all six speeches and evaluations at an end, an educated, enthralled and inspired audience, what ubetter than to test their knowledge, grammaticism and listening skills. Back came grammarian Simon with a few testing questions. And here's the surprise, get the answer right and there was a sweet treat... literally!

All good things have to come to end and with time of essence, timekeeper Amma as back to give a final analysis of timings. Ouch! One over-run speech and one over-run evaluation, but not to worry we're still on track with time and we even have time for another quote; 'Time is the most valuable thing that a man can spend' - Diogenes Laerthius.

On that note it was time to conclude and summarize the evenings event. David Quasie from Meridian Speakers, exquisitely delivered a true and concise account of the event and its participants. Thank You David.

Before we depart ways, President Hanna gave the opportunity for guests both existing and new (YOU ARE ALL VERY WELCOME) to provide their feedback on the evenings event. And as expected Croydon Communicators lived up to expectations to inspire, motivate, educate whilst having fun at another Thursday evening at Croydon Communicators.

If you ever want to improve your Public Speaking, Confidence and Leadership skills there's no better way other than to come down, join in and get involved.

Croydon Communicators certainly demonstrated another evening of "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER"

What Energy, Buzz, Enthusiasm and Vibes this Thursday evening at Croydon Communicators!

We must be doing something right or is it the energy just reaching far & wide. A HUGE WELCOME to our regular guest attendees and more new faces for inspiration, learning and fun... YOU ARE ALL WELCOME!

First to greet everyone at the door, was Mohan (CONGRATULATIONS) as first time greeter giving a warm welcome to all.

Feeling Relaxed already? Well Arlene, Sergeant at Arms, just knows how to receive everyone and open the event with a huge WELCOME.

Our re-energized President Hanna - back from vacation - soon pumped some energy into the already relaxed audience with a brief history of Toastmasters and Croydon Communicators.

And as if there was not enough energy already Hanna doubled up as Toastmaster for the evening to set the audience up for another fun filled, inspirational, motivational & educational evening ahead.

Intros & formalities out of the way and Kalpa came up on stage to give a precise account of her first time role as Timekeeper (CONGRATULATIONS).

We'll be listening for the 'bell of shame'.

Soon after, another first time role presented itself as Amma (CONGRATULATIONS) took up her Grammarian role. We'll be watching out for those erm's and arr gap fillers, the word of the day, 'Determined'; Oh, and best use of grammaticism throughout! Speakers you have been pre-advised!

With so much to ahead to learn, why not begin with a tip! John kindly gave the Tip of The day; Check your Financial Health on a regular basis. Don't let your finances fall ill, a simple credit check is all the worth while. Thanks John.

With the audience primed and ready to go, it was time to get them talking and Thandi (CONGRATULATIONS) in her first time role as Warm Up Leader - one would never have even guessed - warmed up the audience with a question "In 10 seconds, tell us your favourite inspirational quote". What a
great way to get the audience thinking and participating with so many positive, goal setting and inspiring quotes. That's why we are here, simply, "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER".

With the vocal chords warmed, set and ready, the audience were in for a treat; four prepared speeches rolled up.

First up to shine was Mobola, with her speech entitled 'Prevention is Better than Cure'. And if one ever knew that, statistically Monday morning was the worst day for a heart attack, one would find a good excuse to take a break every Monday morning! Look after your heart, take things easy, avoid ;Monday's! Great speech, and thanks for the advice!

Second to take the stage with her number two speech entitled 'The Language of the Venetians' was Wumi. Now here was a lesson for both sexes. Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. The battle of the sexes. Take the advise men... no women! Oh, I give up! This is complicated to say the least, who's right? Definitely "The Language of the Venetians". Excellently delivered speech and with lots of thought provoking ideas... suggestions...no questions... Oh, I give up... for BOTH sexes!

Still with the speeches and third in line to take the stage was Cheryn with her speech entitled 'A Journey of a Thousand Miles' - the Toastmaster Journey! This was a lesson to any budding, fresher or seasoned Toastmaster, full of sound advice and guidance within the Toastmaster arena. The journey continues...

Last and certainly not least came Sue with 'Liberte'. One could not distract the audience as they sat listening intensely to the story of survival in Revolutionary France. One can never stop learning here at Croydon Communicators!

With all four main speeches completed with style and panache, it was time for the evaluators Anne, Raquel, Joe & Gareth to provide some positive comments, commendations and recommendations on the all the speeches. First to evaluate was Anne who pointed out good use of stage and excellent content of 'Prevention is Better than Cure'. Then Raquel, illustrated more stage presence and expressed the practicability and usefulness of content in 'The Language of the Venetians'. Third to evaluate was Joe, evaluating 'A Journey of a Thousand Miles'. How appropriate, we are all on that same journey! And last of the evaluations was Gareth who demonstrated the finer details of evaluation techniques when evaluating 'Liberte' - can we see more of that book please?

With so much information, fun and learning a short break prevailed, but before the break Kalpa gave an account of timings so far. Glad to hear we're on schedule and no ring of that Bell of Shame!

After a short break, there was more inspiration, fun, energy and learning - the audience were in for some more humour with lots of impromptu. speaking... Bring on the Table Topics!

Arlene, the Table Topics Master for the session ingeniously came up with an innovative Table Topics session and everyone was given a fortune cookie! Why! Well you'll find out...

The unsuspecting TT candidates were to answer / elaborate on the question in their fortune cookie's.

Some interesting questions arose; "No duty is more important than just giving thanks?", "Love like a river will cut a new path around an obstacle?" "Forget past mistakes/failure/forget everything and Just Do It?", "My greatest glory consists of not rising, but getting up?", "Happiness is not ai. reward, it's a consequence?", "A successful team is a group of many hands but one mind?"...

Candidates, tell us your answers: Mohan – Taking a very positive outlook on life; Elizabeth - Choosing to simply Give Thanks... 'Thank You Elizabeth'; Simon - Very attached to emotion with Love; Samir - What a true TT speaker! Samir, you not only 'Just Did It', you NAILED IT!!; Mathew - Never failing to get up. If you're knocked down seven times, get up for the eighth, try again and never give up!; Shaun - Feeling happy, but I'm not touching it! It's an emotion; KayJay - I disagree! That sounds like Communism for those into politics! It's about 'one direction' not 'one mind'... aren't One Direction a pop group?? :-)

TT evaluators Aleks & Ayo - another first time time role (CONGRATULATIONS), provided some very constructive and useful feedback on the responses from all the TT candidates, clearly illustrating the skills and importance of listening to evaluate.

Amma, delivered a full and comprehensive report of the evenings grammar with detailed analysis of erm's, arr's, outstanding phrases, words and the use of the word of the day, Determined. This was a truly exceptional first time role as Grammarian and there was so much to say but not enough... ding ding ding!

Keeping a watchful eye on timings, it was time for a recap from Kalpa, and Oh Yes, we did hear that 'bell of shame', say no more!

So with the evenings events drawing to a graceful end it was time for a general evaluation, and from no-one other than the very experienced and diligent David T, who delivered a precise account of commendations, tips and recommendations on all speakers during the event.

One has to say, there is no better way to develop and improve Public Speaking, Confidence and Leadership skills other than to get involved... Join in,  Just do it.

Croydon Communicators certainly demonstrated another evening of "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER"

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 22nd November 18:45 prompt! Everyone welcome.

Remember to bring your Competent Leader manual with you when you attend a Toastmaster meeting.
And . . . remember to get an evaluation if you should be carrying out a role!

Thursday 25th Oct 2012

Le Tour d'Thursday nuit! One never fails to learn something new on a Thursday evening at... where? Croydon Communicators!

And how nice it is to see guests both regular and new attending for more inspiration, learning and fun... WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME!

Sergeant at Arms Anne, reliably set order and gathered the audience to open the meeting with a brief explanation of amenities, fire & safety, silence phones and off we go for another great evening ahead.

We had another first time role by stand-in President - Joe. And there's more proof of what being a member of Croydon Communicators for less than one year can do! Diligently describing how one can develop leadership, public speaking and presentation skills in a supportive environment and with the full backup of an inspiring team... right here at Croydon Communicators.

Toastmaster for the evening was the forever inspiring David T, who took the helm and set the wheels in motion for another exciting evening ahead.

Straight in with the roles and intros with, who is going to keep order with Time and Grammaticism for the show?

First, Mohan in his first time role (CONGRATULATIONS) as Timekeeper, was not afraid to 'issue a ticket' to anyone exceeding their allotted speech time.

Then Grammarian, Raquel explained the benefits of speech Grammaticism and 'Collaboration' as the word of the day. Surely we will collaborate as always... "Excellence Together".

With the rules & regulations clearly defined, how about a Tip of The day. Isaac, an entrepreneur in the making instilled some perseverance, self believe and determination into the audience, which definitely got the audience motivated & inspired. What a great start!

It was time to get the audience acquainted; and with 'Bond, James Bond 007' hitting the limelight this week, Kuashik in his first role as warm up leader (CONGRATULATIONS), warmed up the audience with a question; "Tell us your name, in classic James Bond style; and if you were to come back in the afterlife, who or what would you come back as?". This threw back a range of humorous responses including 000, 002, 5374 oops that my PIN number! An ant and a chicken!??*?!... Mmmm, I'm sure the audience was certainly warmed up :)

With the audience chuckled & warmed up, it was time to get down to some serious business with four prepared speeches, which included one ICE BREAKER!

First to shine on stage was Thandi, with her Ice Breaker speech entitled 'That Old Saying'. From the warm sunshine of Trinidad, to a high rise apartment in not so sunny Glasgow, mortgage broker, bank branch manager, people management, the audience was left gripped by the real Thandi. Just fantastic, you will go far! You surely broke the ICE and we cant wait to hear more! (CONGRATULATIONS).

Second to take the stage, and with her number two speech, was Ayo with a speech entitled 'The Maid of Honour'. Perfectly delivered with Ayo's natural style and humour blending in. The Bride & the Groom complementing each other in harmony. Anyone in the audience would think they were at that wedding listening to the Maid of Honour deliver her speech. Top marks Ayo, when is the next wedding and are we invited?

The speeches kept rolling and third in line to take the stage was Oscar presenting his speech entitled, 'The Billboard of the African Continent'. Again, the audience was gripped with interest. Media perceptions are not always what they appear to be! Don't be deceived, Africa is on the way up. Are you in line for a career in Politics Oscar?

And last but certainly not least came 'Le Tour d'Bike', by our very own VP of Mentoring, Gareth. That machine (sorry, mountain bike!), looks mean and very complicated to say the least. Gareth definitely gave the audience something to think about when contemplating purchasing a mountain bike. Air pocket suspension filled with oil, soft tyres, Derailleur shift gears, super strengthened forks, special locking pedals! Great captivating speech! One still wonders how Gareth managed to lift up that machine (sorry, mountain bike!) so effortlessly, so many times during his speech... was it really that light?

With so many facts and bundles of information from four great speeches it was time for Evaluations. Evaluators Cheryn, Gareth, Anne & Michael provided some positive comments, commendations and recommendations on the four speeches. Cheryn, clearly identifying the positive points of ‘That Old Saying’ and exercising CCRRC evaluation principles & techniques. Gareth highlighting good content and speech structure for ‘The Maid of Honour’. Anne expressing great use of props and visual aids for use in ‘The African Billboard’, whilst Michael evaluated by outlining the finer details of ‘Le Tour d'Bike - Maybe you could have rode in on that machine (I mean mountain bike!) All the evaluators clearly demonstrating the importance of having good listening skills. "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER".

A short break loomed and as time is of the essence, a prompt call for timings was made by toastmaster David T. Mohan delivered a precise time report and issued one ticket for exceeding the allotted time for one of the roles.

Some more fun and humour resumed after the break via impromptu speaking through the Table Topics session, as the second half of the meeting commenced.

Table Topics master for the evening Mobola, called upon some unsuspecting members and guests, asking them a variety of questions.

Questions such as, "Tell us one thing we do not know about you?", "I'm a slogan and it says...?", "Name a gift you would never forget?", "Would you prefer to be hairy or bald?", "At a friends dinner, you find an insect in your meal, what do you do?"...

Answers from the unsuspecting TT Contenders, Simon – Maybe one day I’ll put the audience to sleep in a hypnotherapy session, because that's what I do!; Elizabeth - Being herself as a slogan, how nice; Arish - doing whatever he wants to get whatever he wants, a very high achiever!; Raja - I am the perfect gift!; Kalpa - preferring to be bald than hairy! My hair will grow back!; Samir - Choosing not to upset the dinner hosts by eating the insect in the soup, who knows, it might actually taste nice!

TT evaluators Wumi & Rahmat, provided some useful feedback on the responses from the unsuspecting TT contenders. Again, demonstrating the power and skills of listening to evaluate.

Doesn't time fly when your having fun?! So time for a recap on timings from Mohan. Due to some clever logistics rescheduling we are back on time and no more tickets were issued.

Raquel, delivered a concise report of the evenings grammatical 'Collaboration' which lead to the General Evaluation for the evening's event.

Paul Carrol of London Athenians, The Hop Poles Pub, 17 King Street, Hammersmith Broadway, London W6, guest and General Evaluator gave an excellent account and round up of the evening’s performances by providing some very useful recommendations and commendations on roles, club and the evening’s event as a whole. One always appreciates the useful feedback and what they can learn from an experienced evaluator. THANK YOU PAUL.

And not forgetting our guests, what are your thoughts, did the evening fulfil your expectations? Email us, let us know your thoughts and come again.

Stand in President Joe, requested feedback and comments from our guests and new faces, six in total! YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME :)  With this, another inspiring, motivating, fun filled, educating evening at Croydon Communicators came to closure.

One has to say, there is no better way to develop and improve Public Speaking, Confidence and Leadership skills other than to get involved.

Croydon Communicators certainly demonstrated another evening of "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER"

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 8th November 18:45 prompt! Everyone welcome.

Thursday 11th Oct 2012

Could a Thursday evening be so enlightening, full of humour, intellect and learning? Only at Croydon Communicators.

And how nice to see so many returning guests and more new faces... YOU ARE ALL WELCOME!!

This Thursday evening presented a first time role by stand-in President - Cheryn. If there was a way to describe how one can develop leadership, presentation and public speaking skills then one only had to witness our stand in President.

Our Toastmaster for the evening was another first time role and was executed with perfection by Sue who gave the meeting a very tasteful edge throughout. Again, another example of 'Excellence Together' at Croydon Communicators.

With formalities over, Donna warmed up the meeting with something for the audience to think about, "What is your favourite World Day or If you could choose a World Day what would you choose and why?" With answers such as "Stay at Home Day", "My Birthday, World Day" and "Day off Work Day", the audience was certainly warmed up for another eventful meeting.

The 'Tip of the Day', was put forward by Raquel and if you ever have problems remembering when the clocks go back or forward during those autumn and spring months, then remember this; 'take a step, and spring forward' into the summer and 'fall back' when the leaves fall in autumn, its as simple as that!

Grammarian, Rhamat gave an insight as to what to expect from our grammaticism throughout the meeting along with the 'Adventitious' word of the day. Definitely one to think about.

Promptly following was the Boss of Time; Timekeeper Oscar, who set order with strick timekeeping, but reluctant to ring that bell of shame. Watch your time speakers, you have been warned!

So down to the speeches, and the evening presented three speeches in all, which included one ICE BREAKER!

Taking centre stage, Mohan set the ball rolling with his Ice Breaker Speech, 'Dreams - Can they be turned into reality?'. They certainly can Mohan, and you proved it! An entrepreneur in the making... keep dreaming, you are surely on course to make those dreams come true (CONGRATULATIONS).

Second to take the stage, and literally with a "BANG" was Aleks with 'Stardust'. Now, if I were a science lecturer I'd be proud to say the least. On the other hand, if I were a student I'd be gripped and mesmerized. This was just a fantastic all round educational speech... and guess what?  Did you know we are all carbon!

Last to take centre stage, but certainly not least, was Anne who enlightened the audience with 'My Back'. Some very useful learning tips for life on how to loosen up those joints, and Oh! Watch your back!

With all the prepared speeches delivered with gusto and style, it was time for the evaluators Joe, David L and David T gave some constructive feedback with commendations and recommendations. Joe putting into practice CCRRC evaluation techniques; the highly experienced David L pointing out the finer details of speech perfection by setting the stage right and the very inspirational David L clinically demonstrating evaluation excellence.

Before the break came some club business presented by Cheryn which included Joe describing the recent Public Relations activities that took place, last Thursday, at Mind in Croydon (venue hosts for Croydon Communicators).  Mind, who were celebrating World Mental Health Day  kindly allocated a slot to Croydon Communicators to demonstrate what we do.  A huge thank you to all those who organised and took part in the Open Day event.  And a special "THANK YOU" to Jacqui & Arlene for allowing Croydon Communicators time and space at the event.

Time for a short break, but before time, how are we doing for time Oscar? A brief report on all speakers timings followed. So far so good! 'Excellence Together'.

The second half of the meeting always brings some fun and humour by introducing impromptu speaking via Table Topics.

Table Topics master for the evening Wumi, offered a variety of questions to the unsuspecting contestants.

Topics questions ranged from, "Who would you most love to meet & why?", "If you where stuck on a Desert Island, which two people would you like to have with you?", "Which Superhero would you most like to be and why?"...

Answers from the unsuspecting TT Contenders, Issac - wishing to meet Richard Branson, I wonder why$$$?; Elizabeth - meeting someone in Business? Could that be Richard Branson as well$$$!?; Kaushik - Don't worry, we all understand Kaushik, very difficult question! Play safe, and yes, we do agree, take the Wife and the Mother-in-Law with you to that desert Island; Mobola - Teleported to the Seychelles. how nice!; KayJay - Who's that Superhero? Bull****man!!! Rid the world of all Bull, and it will be a much better place... totally agree; Ayo - Family Love, definitely so; Simon - Meeting the Queen to discuss 'The Lisbon Treaty'... are you a Politician of some sort? And last but certainly not least Anna - what a coincidence! You've done this before! OK, we'll settle for Apple and Custard Pie sounds nice.. MMmmm :)

With the meeting drawing to an end it was left to our VP of Education, Gareth to sum up the evenings meeting. And with much wit & humour Gareth summed up another exciting, educating and inspiring Thursday evening at Croydon Communicators where leaders are made.

Croydon Communicators certainly demonstrated another evening of "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER"

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 25th October 18:45 prompt! Everyone welcome.

Don't miss out, be part of it Get Involved & Get Motivated, Be Inspired, Build Confidence, Educate, Have Fun, Smile.

Division K Tip 13 - Twinning

A very good piece of advice I received shortly after I joined Toastmasters was this – Go & visit other Toastmaster clubs

Tip No 13 is a variation of this idea – twinning at club level

Suggest that committees, VPEs in particular, co-operate with their fellow officers in other nearby club or clubs, making it easy to swap General Evaluators, speakers and so on
Members benefit by speaking in new locations to new audiences. The exchange of ideas will strengthen the clubs too

And if you have speaking slots available, or need a time keeper, who better to help you fill these vacancies than your twin club?

Thanks to Canary Wharf Communicators & Meridian Speakers for this idea

I can testify to its effectiveness when Purley Speakers & Croydon Communicators worked together near the end of the last Toastmasters year

27th Sept Meeting - HUMOROUS SPEECH & TABLE TOPICS COMPETITION

Something different took place this Thursday at Croydon Communicators which definitely lived up to an evening of laughter.

This was the Division K, Area 35 "HUMOROUS SPEECH CONTEST and TABLE TOPICS CONTEST" and it was time for Croydon Communicators to shine again.

What a turnout! And great to see several new guests! YOU ARE WELCOME!!

Organised by Gareth - Croydon Communicator's Vice President of Mentoring the show was on.

The format was a little different from the norm, and Division K, Area 35 Governor... Dave L - Contest Chair for the event swiftly set the stage for the show and presented the schedule, formalities and order.

This was a very professionally organised event and soon after the rules were explained to the contestants, cards were drawn to determine the order of play.

Judges sat poised and timekeepers, Donna and Wumi set the clocks then... game ON!!

Eight Contestants took center stage through the evening and the audience were enlightened to a night of Speeches filled with Humour.

First up was Oscar, who recently joined Croydon Communicators. And full credit to Oscar who literally threw himself in at the deep end. Oscar's first speech! And he nailed it in the competition! Trapped between the lifestyles of UK & Ghana... Oscar or should I say "Uncle Oscar" that was simply brilliant!

Second came Rahmat, speaking about the very own Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, in very high places!

Thirdly Aarthi, took the audience on an island of forgiveness... don't be afraid, jump in Aarthi; the water is nice, honest!

Fourth in line was Sue, with too much stuff in that closet... sell sell sell $ $ $

Then fifth came Sarah, with some mischievous friends... I wish I saw your painted face!

Sixth to take the stage was Joe. Who said life was easy? Watch out for those deals! That's LIFE!

Seventh place presented itself to our very own President Hanna... Ladies, now there's a lesson, or two.. read the book, or two! PS/ Any lessons for the gents?

And last but certainly not least was Arlene, who could get away with anything back in Jamaica... as long as Granny was around!

All speeches were outstanding, setting high standards and full of humour.

A quick break followed, and the pressure released from the contestants; but not for long! Back on stage for the Table Topics Competition...

The same question thrown to all contestants "Do you agree Yes or No - Life is too short to stuff a mushroom?"

Contestants Sarah, Aarthi, Rhamat, John, Hanna, Joe, Sue, Arlene, Oscar (in no particular order) all spontaneously gave their impromptu best.

After much deliberation by the judges, there were WINNERS!

In the HUMOROUS SPEECH COMPETITION - CONGRATULATIONS to:

                                     1st -   Aarthi
                                     2nd - Oscar
                                     3rd -  Arlene

In the TABLE TOPICS COMPETITION - CONGRATULATIONS to:

                                     1st -  Hanna
                                     2nd - Aarthi
                                     3rd -  Sue

WELL DONE to all those who participated in the competition and for all those who made the event a success and took roles.

Division K Tip 12 - Adding Text to Contest Certificates

Did you know that you can add text (eg contestant’s name) to the Toastmasters contest certificates?
It’s easy!

First, ensure that you have the latest versions of the certificates (first place, second place, third place & participation)

The new versions have the suffix FFE in their file names
For example:
Old version: 510A-1stPlaceSpchContCert.pdf
New version: 510A-1stPlaceSpchContCertFFE.pdf

The new certificates have a large button (Highlight Existing Fields) at the top, on the right hand side.
Click on this, and the Presented To:, For, Date & Presenter fields are clearly shown
The system is very clever – font size is automatically reduced as you keep typing
So you can easily fit, for example “Croydon Communicators Humorous Speech Contest”, in to the For field

Thank you to Adrian (President, Speakers of Croydon) for this tip
And Evelyn (VPE, Bromley Speakers) very effectively used the same approach at the recent Bromley Speakers contest.

Division K Tip 11 - Awards & Recognition

Division K Education & Training Tip No 11 Awards & Recognition

Recognition of achievement is a hugely important part of the Toastmasters experience – Best Speaker certificates, ribbons for individuals and clubs, award certificates and so on

Here’s a tip to encourage wider acknowledgement of achievement
When a member completes all the necessary requirements for an award, a club officer (usually the VPE) will log in to Club Central & post these details to the Toastmasters web site.

They’ll see this sentence as part of that awards dialogue:
“If you wish for the award packet to be mailed to a different address you may specify that below.”

The suggestion is for the award packet to be sent, not to the award winner, but to your Club President.
After it arrives, the President can present the certificate at the next club meeting.
So as well as their certificate, the recipient will get public acclaim & recognition for their accomplishment!

Thank you to Peter Gerlach Division K Governor for this Tip

Thursday 13th Sept 2012

Thursday night was just another inspiring evening at Croydon Communicators and what a turnout of new guests! WELCOME!!

Attendees were warmly greeted by Sergeant at Arms (Arlene) who subtly opened another very INSPIRING evening full of Education, Learning and Humour. Where else could one be on a Thursday evening?

Our forever energised Club President Hanna took control and WELCOMED members and guests to another fun filled, educational evening of learning & development. On that note the audience was ready for an evening of edutainment.

Toastmaster, Michael diligently kept the flow of the meeting throughout the evening with a very colourful game... all will be revealed later!

And if time was a matter for concern, the meeting was kept to schedule with the notorious bell via Timekeeper Rahmat.

A first timer, Oscar our Grammarian (CONGRATS!), who really 'INSPIRED" the audience with the Word of the Day.

Continuing with formalities "Don't Start what you can't Finish, set the mood for a useful 'Tip of The Day' from Anne.

Another first time role, as warm-up leader, presented itself to Sarah as she produced a unanimous "Birthday" choice as the audiences chose their favourite day of the year (CONGRATS!).

One Ice Breaker & three speeches were to follow - setting the pace for the night - straight into action...

If ever there was a time to take note of change then Mobola certainly proved that with her ICE BREAKER speech! 'Change' which had the audience definitely thinking about life's exciting changes from Nigeria, working life through to new business goals. How inspiring to say the least and so much potential. CONGRATS! Can't wait to hear more!

Secondly came Raquel, who gave the audience a lesson on IT Housekeeping. "Think Before You Print"... Raquel, are you an Environmentalist? One could never leave a Croydon Communicators meeting on a Thursday evening without learning a tip or two. A very informative speech with plenty of information for the audience to take away.

Third to shine on stage was Cheryn, "Tomorrow Never Comes", are you telling us that you are guilty of 'Procrastinating?' Never would have guessed! Something we're all guilty of at times! What a speech to say the least; that was supreme. We could all learn a tip or two from that. And start learning that Piano!

And last of the four speeches but certainly not least came... wait for it... Champion of Champions... Malachi "The Autograph".... Simply put, Superb! I think I'll go and buy that book and furthermore get it autographed!

Evaluate, Evaluate, Evaluate & the Power of Three... up came the evaluators, providing some very useful and constructive feedback on all four speeches. Evaluators, Joe putting into practice some evaluation tips from the Freddie Daniels recent workshop, held at Bromley Speakers the very experienced and esteemed David L, the promising & confident Gareth and very inspiring and motivational David L all gave some very useful & encouraging feedback, encouraging hints & tips on of the the four speeches. There was definitely a lot to take away and learn.

This was another great night of true edutainment and there was more to come!

A short break and the Toastmaster Michael, 'colourfully'  introduced the second half of the meeting with more fun and humour, and another 1st time role! Ayo (CONGRATS!) as the Table Topics Master for the session.

Ayo led the audience through some impromptu speaking in the Table Topics session with some very intriguing Topics questions ranging from 'looking back and seeing yourself in the mirror', "I'll learn learn & learn" KayJay; Cheryn, back on stage, 'things you wish you could do', it's imminent now, that "Piano has to come out of the cupboard" and "sprechen German"; 'Achievements this year?', "Joining Toastmasters", your in the right place Ama; 'Stopping time for an hour'', was Ola "going back to Nigeria for an hour"; 'Favourite Theme', "Help someone each day", thanks Arlene; Thandi, 'could never fail', by "doing that workout DVD", and Arthi, your next holiday be sure to take armbands and "learn to swim"!

We're constantly learning and developing; John K & Anne, delivered some very useful feedback, tips & hints whilst evaluating the Table Topics contenders which was promptly followed by Oscar's summary on the use of Grammar throughout the evening.

So all can now be revealed, Michael's analysis of the audience’s choices of favourite colour "The audience tonight was predominantly BLUE!"... we are calm, sophisticated, thoughtful and helpful people... Mmmm one to think about!

Guest General Evaluator, Sue, topped off the meeting with some very observant points about the evenings meeting. THANK YOU SUE!

This was another great evening full of entertainment in a supportive environment inspired by our President Hanna and backed up with a team of experienced and up & coming new leaders and members.

Can't wait until the next meeting - "HUMOROUS SPEECH CONTEST and TABLE TOPICS CONTEST" - Thurs 27th Sept 18:45 prompt!  Contact Gareth to book your place. Everyone welcome.

Let me know what you think of these pocket guides

Division K Tip 9 - making your contest participation count...

Contest Reminder

Remember that you can be evaluated for:

* organising a club special event

* being a contest chair

* delivering a contest speech

Contest Tip

Most of the official Toastmasters forms are specific to a particular type of contest

Some of them, eg the Time Record Sheet, the Counter's Tally Sheet, can be used for all contests

So, the tip is to write clearly, on these general purpose forms, the event in which they're actually being used - one set for Humorous Speech, the other for Table Topics

And on the Time Record Sgeet, suggest highlighting the appropriate timing guidelines paragraph

Thus will be removed some possible sources of confusion, which could otherwise arise under the excitement of contest conditions

Thursday 30th Aug 2012

Thursday nights' at Croydon Communicators always seek to humour, educate & inspire and yesterday delivered.

Sergeant at Arms Anne, gracefully opened the evening and we were led by an esteemed Toastmaster Hanna, who always demonstrates leadership at its best – her theme for the evening was inspired by the Olympics "what was your favourite sport at school?" and "which world renowned athlete or sports person would you want to be and why?"

The evening presented itself with an array of first time roles & Ice Breaker speeches.

In order of appearance and keeping track of time and grammar was Mobola (as always on point) & Kalpa on her first time role superbly executed (CONGRATS Kalpa!).

Mohan took centre stage in his first role as warm-up leader (CONGRATS!) and gently eased the audience into the session.

Tip of The day was presented by Joe reminding the audience about some home truths... "don't forget how fortunate we are!"

Then came the speeches, four in all, and if ever there was an opportunity to aspire to, this was it.

First up was Ayo, who blew the audience away with her 27 Dresses, Ice Breaker? too good to be true! What a performance, a natural on stage, who had the audience in fits of laughter. Well Done Ayo... Fantastic to say the least!

Second up was Donna, informing the audience about 'My Best'... Ice Breaker! No way... again, too good to be true! That was sublime, exquisite, executed with perfection, body language and use of stage. WOW! Can't wait to see what's next...

Thirdly, Sarah with 'What an Adventure', another Ice Breaker! And what an adventure it was; I for one, thought at one point I was on that bike going of a cliff face! Gripping speech.

And last of the speeches but certainly not least came Isaac and 'Dreams', cool, calm and collected with big dreams; and why not, the sky is the limit! Superb.

The edutainment flowed; then came the evaluations, providing some very useful and constructive feedback on all four speeches. Evaluators, Joe, Neelam, David T and Arcadius presented their opinions, tips, praises and thoughts. Very encouraging and an education for all throughout.

This was definitely a night of speeches setting new standards for all to aspire to.

The second half of the meeting presented more fun and humour with another esteemed member Cheryn who led the audience through some impromptu speaking in the Table Topics session. Topics ranged from 'choice of colours' to 'commanding roles' and we had topics contenders, Arcadius choosing not to Advertise, Oscar in the driving seat commanding his business, Wumi torn between Pink & Blue, Rahmat as knowledgeable as ever and the very experienced David L who was truly split between Wisdom & Intellect.

John K & Aleks, delivered some very useful comments whilst evaluating the Table Topics contenders and TT session overall.

To top off the meeting, David Q gave an impressive general evaluation, THANKS DAVID!

This was another great evening full of entertainment in a supportive environment inspired by our President Hanna and backed up with a team of experienced and up & coming new leaders and members.

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 13th Sept 18:45 prompt!

Division K Tip 8 - two briefing sessions?

Consider having TWO briefing sessions, one before the Humorous Speech Contest & the other before the Table Topics Contest

Why?

To reduce confusion; there are differences between the two contests:

* The Humorous Speech & Topics Contests differ widely in the way they’re run

* There are two sets of forms, with different judging criteria; different timings for the two events

* There’s likely to be a different mix of contestants & functionaries for the two events

Two sets of briefings will thus allow everybody concerned (Contest Chair & Chief Judge giving the briefings; contestants & functionaries being briefed) to concentrate fully on the next event.

Tip 7 clarification

To start, there’s a clarification of Tip No 7, which included the warning that the Rule Book’s list of those ineligible to compete includes this entry:

“A member serving as a judge at any level for a contest in which the member is still competing"

It was asked if this rule applies to Chief Judges as well

The answer is Yes, it does

Thanks to David Marks (President Russian English Speakers) & Kulmit Bhambra (President CWC, Assistant Governor Area 31) for raising this issue, and to Melinda Perez of Toastmasters International’s Speech Contests Team for providing the definitive answer

Thursday 23rd Aug 2012

Another inspiring evening was held at Croydon Communicators, Mind in Croydon 10 Altyre Road, East Croydon CR0 5LA on Thursday 23rd Aug 2012.

If you ever wanted to be energised & inspired, then Croydon Communicators was the place to be on a Thursday evening.

It was also nice to see lots of new faces and regular guests signing up to full membership! New members... WELCOME :) You will not be disappointed!

The evening progressed with Toastmaster Gareth, leading the way with energy, ease and much humour.

We were enlightened by three great speeches, firstly an Ice Breaker speech "Two sides of Wumi" by Wumi who enlightened us with some 'real life' challenges which kept the audience totally engaged, and with plenty of laughter. Not a shred of nerves and a very positive performance.

Then followed up by an insight into the world "Media Power", and it worked! 'Have a Break' incited a prize delivery of a KitKat! Hope you enjoyed it Hanna?

Last but certainly not least of the prepared speeches was "Top Dog", by David B. Could you ever imagine witnessing two extravagant yachts' 'locked in unison' via a freak accident caused by pride?

We keep producing excellence... talented timekeeping; Ayo on her first timekeeping role. And more excellence... Mobola on her first Grammarian role with words of wisdom.

The Table Topics session always produces rolls of laughter. Led by Rahmat who dished out the best of the best, delivering some thought provoking topics questions from Wives' of Henry the 8th, Luna rotations, Champagne and Tigers!

And there were some great responses which included Lunatic's produced from Luna rotations; Mr. Champagne & his love for 'maybe' beer! the four legged Tiger who knew his way home! And Wives' of Henry the 8th where Mike E demonstrated the skilful art of Impromptu Speaking by answering, "Yes", 6 wives and possibly more associates!

To complete the program there were role performances by Cheryn (Evaluator & Tip of The Day), the experienced & esteemed David L (Evaluator), the true professional Shegun (Evaluator), Aleks (Warm Up Leader), Topics Evaluators (Anne & John) and always on point Dave T (General Evaluator) all of whom shined on stage.

Great evening as always, inspired by our President Hanna, backed up with a team of experienced and up & coming new leaders.

Thursday evenings could never be a dull evening at Croydon Communicators.

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 30th Aug 18:45!

Get Involved & Get Motivated, Be Inspired, Build Confidence, Educate, Have Fun, Smile.

Division K Tip 7 - Contests and a note of caution

This week's Tip relates to the approaching contests & sounds a note or two of caution.
The competition event consists of two contests, so there's plenty of opportunity to participate, and to mix & match - to compete in one & take on a role in the other.

However, the Rule Book says (in the General Rules Section, sub-section 2 Eligibility, paragraph A)
"4.The following are ineligible to compete in any Toastmasters speech contest:
a) A member serving as a judge at any level for a contest in which the member is still competing"

Secondly: Contest Chair
"Is a member allowed to act as contest chair in one speech contest and compete in another?
Yes, as long as the contest where the member is competing and the contest where the member is serving as a contest chair are not at the same event.

Example: Jane Doe is competing at Area G's fall conference in the Tall Tales contest. She cannot serve as a contest chair for any contests at Area G's fall conference. Jane is not competing in Area F's fall conference. Jane Doe can serve as a contest chair for any contest at Area F's fall conference"
This question and many others can be found here http://www.toastmasters.org/faq and scroll down to Speech Contests Frequently Asked Questions

Thirdly: Judges qualifications
Judges at club level contests must be members in good standing
Above club level, the Rule Book says (in the General Rules section, sub-section 5 General Procedure, paragraph B)
"2. All judges at area, division, and district speech contests shall have been a Toastmasters member in good standing since the previous July 1 and have completed at least six speech projects in the Competent Communication manual"

Division K Tip 6 - Moments of Truth & Creating the Best Club Climate

The Toastmasters Educational presentations Moments of Truth & Creating the Best Club Climate both emphasise the importance of running exciting meetings with creative Table Topics sessions.

Some ideas for creative Table Topics:

The Switch
Choose topics which allow the speakers to take a definite stance – either Yes, definitely in favour, or No, definitely against.

Explain that the speaker must promote this stance with all the passion at their disposal.
At a suitable (or maybe embarrassing!) moment, you, the Topics Master, will call Switch! Whereupon the speaker must smoothly, stylishly and seamlessly promote the diametrically opposite point of view, with the same fervour as they began the topic

The Split
You all know how important command of language & vocal variety, body language & gestures are to ensuring your speeches have impact? And how Table Topics is all about dealing with the unexpected?

Here’s an approach which deals with all of those

Each Topic is to be answered by a team of two people

The Speaker describes the scene as vividly as possible – plenty of vocal variety and so on
And stands still, with no gestures or other movement

The Mover however adds all the body language, gestures, movement with purpose, to illustrate the Speaker’s description. And says not a word.

At the end of the Topic, the Speaker stands down & the Mover becomes the Speaker for the next Topic.  The first Speaker can become the Mover in the last topic.

The Debate
As in The Switch, choose a question which lends itself to definite For and Against points of view.

Have two teams, with two or three speakers apiece.
These speakers take turns to eloquently persuade the audience to adopt their team's position.

This stage is followed by questions from the floor

And then a vote to decide the winning team
Mark their victory with prizes!

These Work!
And experience has shown that even the newest guest can participate whole-heartedly

If you would like to deliver one of these speeches, contact our VPE, Cheryn.

Division K Tip 5 - Upcoming contests

Division K Education & Training
This tip, Tip No 5, relates to approaching Contests

1. Open to all
Unlike the International Speech contest (where there's a minimum entry requirement - ie must have completed at least 6 projects from the CC manual) both the Humorous Speech & the Table Topics are open to all members in good standing.

2. Opportunity
The Humorous Speech contest is a speaking opportunity as well as a competing opportunity.
The contest speech could also be a speech from a manual, provided it meets both contest objectives & manual objectives.
Contestants will get a written evaluation, though not a public, spoken one.

3. Documentation
All contest documentation (including the Rule Book, forms, certificates) can be downloaded, free, from the Toastmasters web site:

Humorous Speech

Table Topics

Aspiring Judges & prospective contestants may wish to have a look at the Judge's Guide & Ballot Sheet for both contests

Watch the World Championship of Public Speaking LIVE on 18 August

From Dorothea Stuart
Last year for the first time you could watch the finals of the World Championship of Public Speaking via LIVE STREAMING. It was great!
This year there are more options -watching it live, watch on demand or get a DVD.  It costs either $29.99 or $39.99 depending on the option you choose. As an experience live streaming is second best to being in Florida at the convention (though you could still do that)!  As an educational tool the on-demand recordings or DVD will give you plenty to think about and make use of in the future.  You can explore the options and pay atwww.toastmasters.org

Division K Tip 4 - Beyond Competent Communicator

Division K Education & Training - Tip No 4
Beyond Competent Communicator
This Tip is intended to inspire all you Advanced (or soon to be Advanced) speakers!

Beyond Competent Communicator?
That's a quote from the web site of Excalibur Speakers
Quoting further:
"Excalibur is London's only advanced Toastmasters club. It is open to any Toastmaster that has achieved the status of 'Competent Communicator' by completing all ten speech projects in the Competent Communication manual.

Excalibur meets once a month in central London, and is dedicated to helping its members take on more challenging speaking projects, while receiving high quality evaluation from experienced fellow Toastmasters."

See these quotes & much more on their web site:

Step Outside
Advanced Manuals say, in the section How to Use This Program:
"Credit up to two (Advanced) speeches per manual given outside a Toastmasters club if:
1) Your vice president education agrees in advance
2) a Toastmasters evaluator is present, completes the written project evaluation, gives a verbal evaluation, and
3) you meet all project objectives"

So, meet those requirements, go speak at your place of work, church, or sports club & get credit for it!

Division K Tip 1 - The Distinguished Club Program (DCP)

The Distinguished Club Program (DCP)

What is the Distinguished Club Program?

It's a set of goals, measures, which clubs & their members aspire to reach, and which show the club's progress on its Toastmasters journey.
There's 10 of them, covering every aspect of the club's operation, and summarising every members' achievements.

Familiar ground, I'm sure!
There's a Toastmasters manual - "Distinguished Club Program and Club Success Plan"
So here's the tip, the suggestion:

Part 1 - Use this manual as a working document

It contains:
a comprehensive description of the DCP O
an example Club Success Plan
a template to prepare your own Club Success Plan
a chart where DCP goals can be ticked off as they're reached
Part 2 - Bring the manual along to club meetings, so that everyone can see how their own successes contribute to the club's progress

Every club should have a copy of this manual
It's also available to download from the Toastmasters web site
